Sunderland – £43 million for 31 goals

Let’s just say this season for Sunderland is not what everyone was expecting it to be, let’s go back 7 months, the fans are all hyped up as the Black Cats have just brought in an England international and a Scottish international which cost 24 million between them, everyone was expecting Europa league but instead we are fighting to stay in the premier league. Sunderland over the past 2 years have spent 43 million on an attack who have scored 31 goals between them, let’s take an in depth look at each attacker and what they have brought to the club.

Danny Graham – £5 million
Maybe Danny Graham has been placed on this list unfairly as he has only made 6 appearances for the club, but the reason I placed him on this list is because so far he has done what everyone including myself thought he would do which is absolutely nothing, I am not saying he is a waste of money because he has not exactly had the warmest of welcomes off the fans due to his Geordie root’s, but he has not exactly proved the fans wrong by being a spectator for the games that he has played.

Steven Fletcher – £12 million

Again, maybe Steven Fletcher has been unfairly placed on this list as he is on the small list of players that have actually done something for the club this season scoring 11 goals, but with a £12 million price tag you would think he would manage more goals than 11, but saying that at the start of the season he did predict that he would score 12 goals which he is well on route to doing, but £1 million per goal does not sit right with me and I have to say I was expecting more from the Scottish International this season, plus have you noticed Fletchers history with teams, Burnley got relegated, Wolves got relegated and now Sunderland are on the verge of being relegated, maybe he is a bad luck charm?

Connor Wickham - £8 million

At 19 years old Connor Wickham still has a bright future, he has all the great attributes to become a great forward someday he is well built, tall and he has a bit of pace about him, but if you ask me I think he needs a bit more experience in a lower league before he even thinks about making it in the Premier League, and the loan to Sheffield Wednesday is sure to help him get the experience he needs, and maybe next season we will see the name Wickham on the score sheet a lot more, but again he is another player who has not yet rose to the level his price tag would suggest.

Stéphane Sessègnon – £6 million

You may be a little shocked to see the little Beninese international on this list as he is again on the small list of players that have actually done something for the club this season, but especially last season not only was he the clubs top scorer with 8 goals but he won the clubs player of the season, the reason I have placed him on this list is because after last season we were expecting the same Sessègnon but sadly we have just not got what we were expecting from him, not that he has let us down on anything he has probably been our best player in the last 5 games or so if you do not count Mignolet, but after the great season he had last year he has just not delivered.

Adam Johnson - £12 million

And now we get to the player that I like to call the ‘Hyped up let down’ when it was announced in August last year that Johnson had signed for us I could not stop smiling I thought for sure he was going to be the player that was going to turn the club around, but silly me he has done nothing apart from score the goal that saw us beat Man City at home for the second season running in December last year. What I saw Johnson do at Man City and what he has done at Sunderland it looks like I have watched two totally different players, yes he did not start a lot of games at City but when he came on as a sub it looked like he totally changed the game around, he is just not the same player at Sunderland, yes the players are not of the same class as they are at City but you think if Johnson was everything we made him out to be he would adapt and that’s why it pains me to say he is one of the club’s biggest waste of money in recent history
